Abstract: In this article we describe and explain patterns of variation in acceptance of 'amn't' in varieties of Scots, using data from the Scots Syntax Atlas. We combine insights from Yang (2016, 2017) and Bresnan (2001) and some new insights into the syntax of Scots negation from Thoms et al. (to appear) to provide a predictive account of the variation we found.
