Look Who's Talking: Stanford Linguists at SLE

This year, the University of Bucharest hosted the 55th annual meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea (SLE) from 24-27 August. Two Stanford alums took part in the workshop titled "Language in narrative and song: dedicated grammar, linguistic creativity and endangered oral traditions:"

  • Tatiana Nikitina (Ph.D. '08) was a keynote speaker with her paper "Character tracking in narratives in Wan (Mande): The use of demonstratives an an obviation strategy."
  • Ekaterina Aplonova, Guillaume Guitang and Tatiana Nikitina presented "Pseudowords and ideophones in West African traditional narratives." 
  • Luc Baronian (Ph.D. '06) and Nicolas Royer-Artuso presented "Searching for phonological evidence in songs from oral traditions (rather than in songs from written traditions)."

The workshop "Subordination and language change: new cross-linguistic approaches and perspectives" featured a Stanford alum as well:

  • Erik Zobel, Charlotte Hemmings, and Mary Dalrymple (Ph.D. '90) presented "Morphological conservatism in Enggano subordinate clauses."
