Artifact of the Month: Chinese Calligraphy Wordplay

As we begin the new lunar year, this month we bring you the Chinese calligraphy decorations created by PhD students Yin Lin Tan and Irene Yi.  A Chinese New Year’s tradition is to hang twin red paper strips on doors with auspicious sayings to welcome the new year and promise good fortune to one’s family.  In these strips, Irene and Yin Lin replaced one character in each of two traditional New Year’s greetings with a character meaning “language”; the result is both linguistics-related and auspicious!  You can find the actual decorations on the door to Room 104 in Margaret Jacks Hall.
