This presentation reconsiders pragmatist semiotic approaches to the study of linguistic perception by demonstrating colonially conditioned ways in which race and language become co-naturalized and overdetermined. By developing analytical strategies for examining these processes, it becomes possible to reconceptualize relationships between analyses of linguistic diversity and contestations of transhistorical power formations.
